#333 closed enhancement (fixed)

Flight mode in PIN dialogue

Reported by: Pander Owned by: mrmoku
Priority: major Milestone:
Component: libphone-ui-shr Version: SHR-unstable
Keywords: Cc: uzytkownik

Description (last modified by dos)

The PIN dialogue needs a "Skip" button, so one can continue without connecting to the GSM network by never powering up the GSM hardware nor starting any GSM services/daemons. This would be a first step towards an implementation of a flight mode.

Not only would this be beneficial when flying, also when using the device when one would not like to be called or simply no network is there to (try to) connect to (Japan/Sahara?) and save power consumption.

Perhaps good to use the name "Flight Mode" on the button in the PIN dialogue, in stead of the "Skip" text. Then all is referring to the same concept.

Also, in the taskbar the text "Flight Mode" should be displayed, in stead of "No Service" and the bars and star indicating GSM network reception should be replaced by a small airplane icon.

From Al Johnson via community list:

"Flight mode" would need to disable WiFi? and Bluetooth too. Or possibly just
WiFi? and Bluetooth, given that GSM picocells are now being deployed in some

Technically they ask to switch off any devices which whould "send or recive signals". Possibly it is because most users do not realize that often reciving (mails etc.) involves sending but it seems they ask to turn off GPS.

here's how to use the flight mode:
*go into the plane, find a seat etc...
*keep your phone open and go in shr-settings->phone
*Slide GSM antenna to off
*power off your phone until the take-off is finished
*when the take-off is finished power on your phone
Normally it should remember the setting and should not power on the GSM antenna
*use your phone...
*power it off for landing
*power it on when landed
*go in shr-settings->phone
*Slide GSM antenna back to on

re-open if you're not satisfied with that flight mode,
but that's also how android does it for instance.

in addition to the settings app you can toggle GSM in the quick settings (power button press). Does the same thing.
